Note from Alanda Craft: Cindy is getting ready for Christmas 2025, what a great idea. She has shared her Christmas rag quilt with us and doesn’t it look lovely.

Cindy has lots of great tips for making rag quilts as you can see in her comment below. I’m certainly going to try out sewing two rows together and ragging them rather than waiting until the end.

Here is a link to our tutorial on How to Make a Rag Quilt so that you can make your own rag quilt.

Comment from Cindy

Christmas quilt now ready for December 2025! I’ve sure learned some tricks to speed up the process.

I didn’t want a thick quilt, so only two layers (front and back) on this one. I was worried that it may not ‘rag’ nicely, but it did! I also had hubby cut me a 7″ plexi square (with a centre handle), which makes cutting the blocks SO much quicker than measuring.

I do a 1/2 inch edging, so the actual block you see is 6″.

I also change my rotary blade often – expensive, but SO worth it to cut through 2 layers very easily. (I’m going to invest in a blade sharpener). Also, I had purchased ragging sheers 2 quilts ago – what a time saver. And with this quilt, I sewed two rows together, then ragged them – seemed so much easier than to wait and rag the whole quilt at once.

Ragging the outer edges saves a lot of time as well, vs a binding edge. I like the look of both. I did something different on this one – I checker boarded the back with 2 fabrics, rather than just one fabric for the entire back.
Your YouTube tutorial is what got me hooked! I watched numerous ‘beginners’ videos, and found yours the best to go by!

Santa’s and snowflakes – a great combination and the red squares really make the quilt pop.
