HST Diamond Quilt Pattern – Tutorial & FREE PDF Download
If you’re looking for a clean, modern quilt that makes a big visual impact without complicated piecing, this Half Square Triangle Diamond quilt is a great choice. It’s made entirely from half-square triangles—which means once you get into the rhythm, the blocks come together quickly and easily.
This is a fantastic pattern for beginners who want to tackle something large but approachable, and it’s an equally fun project for experienced quilters who love a big graphic layout.

Choosing Your Fabrics
I went with the Emily Belle collection by Liberty. These were a bargain from our local Spotlight store here in Australia at only $12.99 a meter. (That’s about $8.50 USD.) In Australia, quilting fabric is not cheap with quality fabrics selling for around $30 a meter or more. So when you find a good brand at such a low price you have to snap it up.

I think most fabrics could work for this as long as they gel with the two main contrasting colours – in my case, these are white and grey. Although, I would generally stick with solids or tone on tone types of fabrics for the contrast, in this case I used a grey design from the Emily Belle collection and I think it worked well, The white is a generic fabric with a nice tone on tone pattern.

Finished Size
The finished size of this quilt will depend on whether or not you choose to trim your blocks. I decided not to trim as my blocks as they were pretty much spot on at 10″.
- 10″ x 10″ blocks – quilt size = approx 96″ x96″
- 9 ¾” x 9 ¾” blocks – quilt size = approx 93.5″ x 93.5″
- 9 ½” x 9 ½” blocks – quilt size = approx 91″ x 91″
Skill Level:
- Beginner Friendly

Fabric Requirements
- Fabric A – 5/8 yard
- Fabric B – 1 ⅛ yard
- Fabric C – 1 ⅜ yard
- Fabric D – 7/8 yard
- Fabric E – 1 ¾ yard
- Fabric F – 2 yards
Cutting Instructions
The first thing we are going to do is to cut our fabric into strips measuring 10½” by the WOF.
Then we will sub-cut each strip into 10½” pieces so that we end up with squares measuring 10½” x10½” .
Here’s how many strips and squares you’ll need from each fabric:

Making the Blocks
This quilt uses only one block type – a half-square triangle (HST).
Take all of the Fabric E (Grey) squares and all of the Fabric F (White) squares and draw a diagonal line across each square using a fabric marker.

Make each block following these steps:
- Pair the fabrics as outlined below with right sides facing
- Sew ¼” on either side of the line that you previously drew
- Cut along the drawn line for each square
- Press the seam towards the coloured fabric

Here’s how many HST’s to make from each combiniation:
Block One – 8 HSTs
Use: 4 squares Fabric A (Red) + 4 squares Fabric F (White)
Make 8 HSTs using the method outlined above.
Block Two – 8 HSTs
Use: 4 squares Fabric A ( Red) + 4 squares Fabric E (Grey)
Make 8 HSTs using the method outlined above.
Block Three – 12 HSTs
Use: 6 squares Fabric B (Brown) + 6 squares Fabric F (White)
Make 12 HSTs using the method outlined above.
Block Four – 16 HSTs
Use: 8 squares Fabric B (Brown) + 8 squares Fabric E (Grey)
Make 16 HSTs.
Block Five – 20 HSTs
Use: 10 squares Fabric C (Yellow) + 10 squares Fabric F (White)
Make 20 HSTs using the method outlined above.
Block Six – 16 HSTs
Use: 8 squares Fabric C (Yellow) + 8 squares Fabric E (Grey)
Make 16 HSTs.
Block Seven – 12 HSTs
Use: 6 squares Fabric D (Orange) + 6 squares Fabric F (White)
Make 12 HSTs using the method outlined above.
Block Eight – 8 HSTs
Use: 4 squares Fabric D (Orange) + 4 squares Fabric E (Grey)
Make 8 HSTs using the method outlined above.
Assemble the Quilt
Now comes the fun part—laying everything out so the diamond design really pops. Arrange your blocks according to the diagram.

Once you’re happy with the layout:
- Sew the blocks together into rows.
- Press the seams in alternating directions ie. to the right in Row 1, to the left in Row 2, and continue alternating as you go down.
- Join the rows together to complete the quilt top.
- Feel free to add borders if you’d like a slightly larger or framed look.
- Quilt and bind to finish.

And that’s it! A full-size, beginner-friendly quilt made entirely from simple HSTs. It’s a great project if you love a clean, modern design without complicated piecing.
