Strip Box Shuffle Quilt Tutorial (+ FREE PDF Pattern)
Looking for a quick and satisfying project? The Strip Box Shuffle Quilt uses simple strip piecing to create a bold, graphic layout — perfect for showing off your favorite prints or diving into your fabric stash. For my version, I used a mix of yellow prints paired with solid black and a warm yellow accent. I bought these from my local Lincraft store here in Australia. The black strips frame the colors beautifully and really make them pop. You can easily switch up the palette — try pastels for a soft, calm, look or bold solids for a strong, modern, contemporary style.
I have used fabric that I have had on hand that I purchased from our local Lincraft store here in OZ. These are generic fabrics that don’t have a brand name, so unfortunately I can’t help you with that.

Choosing Your Fabric
This quilt is made up of two different blocks:
- BLOCK A – a simple strip-pieced block using 7 assorted fabrics. It may look like 5 fabrics in the image below but you will be arranging the strips randomly, so you will need all seven. Using seven fabrics helps to create a more varied look across the quilt.
- BLOCK B – a framed block with a yellow centre and black borders. Of course, you can choose your favourite colours.

Fabric Requirements
| Fabric | Amount |
|---|---|
| Block A – 7 assorted fabrics | ⅓ yd each (2 ⅓ yds total) |
| Block B – Yellow fabric | ¾ yd |
| Block B – Black fabric | 1 ½ yds |
| Binding | ½ yd |
| Backing (42″ wide) | 4 ½ yds (based on 4” overage on all sides) |
| Batting | Twin size (at least 69″ × 78″) |

Block A Construction
- Randomly arrange the assorted fabric strips into sets of five strips each. So you’ll create seven strip sets in total – each with 5 strips.
- Sew the strips together along the long edges using a ¼” seam allowance.
- Once sewn, each strip set should measure 9 ¼” wide.
The image below is an example of what one of these strip-sets will look like:

- Press seams to one side.
- Sub-cut each of the strip sets into four blocks measuring 9 ¼” × 9 ¼”.
- Total: 28 Block A units.

Block B Construction
- Sew a black strip (2 ¼” × WOF) to each side of a yellow strip (5 ¾” × WOF).
- Press seams toward the black fabric. Repeat this step with the remaining strips to make four strip sets.

- Sub-cut each strip set into seven pieces each measuring 5 ¾” wide.
- Total: 28 pieces.

- Take the 28 pieces and sew one black rectangle (2 ¼” × 9 ¼”) to each side.
- Press seams toward the black
- Total: 28 Block B units.

Quilt Top Assembly
- Lay out your blocks in 8 rows of 7 blocks each (56 blocks total).
Alternate Block A and Block B in a checkerboard layout.- Row 1 starts with Block B
- Row 2 starts with Block A
- Continue alternating rows in this pattern
- Sew the blocks together to form each row.
Press seams in opposite directions for each row to help them nest neatly. - Sew the rows together to complete your quilt top.

Finishing
- Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing.
- Quilt as desired.
- Bind using your preferred method.
Your Quilt Is Complete!
The Strip Box Shuffle Quilt is a great way to play with contrast and color while keeping the construction simple. Try it with solids for a bold modern look, or mix in prints for a fun, scrappy feel.
