Here is an easy Jelly Roll Quilt top that you will find quick and easy to do. It’s ideal for your first Jelly Roll quilt as we use straight seams to attach the strips to each other instead of the usual 45° angle.

It's a Slow Jog
Now this method is usually called a Jelly Roll Race quilt but we take our time so it’s more of a Jelly Roll slow jog. We like to untangle the strips before we sew we find it makes it easier for us.

We used a Paradiso by Kate Spain for Moda Jelly Roll to make this quilt and we are so happy with the result. This is probably no longer available however there are lots of lovely Jelly Rolls available.

Moda Paradiso Jelly Roll

Check out our video tutorial below

The finished size of the brown jelly roll quilt (pictured below) measures approx. 72″ x80″

  • Jelly Roll quilt top – 54½” x 62″
  • Border 1 – 3″
  • Border 2 – 6″

What you Need:

  • 1 Jelly Roll
  • Border 1 – 5/8 yard
  • Border 2 – 1 1/3 yard
  • Backing – 4½ yards
  • Batting – 4½ yards
  • Binding – ½ yard

Places you can buy Jelly Rolls online

  • The Fat Quarter Shop has a nice selection of Jelly Rolls
  • Amazon has some lovely Jelly Rolls.
  • Annies also has some really nice Jelly Rolls

Use Your Fabric Stash

The quilt below is made from strips that we cut from our stash. Don’t you just love the autumn tones? We added the following borders to this quilt

  • border 1 measures 3″
  • border 2 measures 6″.

You can see the final result of our jelly roll scrap quilt after Chris, our longarm quilter had worked her magic.

And here is our tutorial on how to make a scrappy stash jelly roll quilt.

We love the bright colours in the Paradiso Jelly Roll as well Shirley. Moda certainly have some great colour ranges. This quilt was so easy to make. You can find the Paradiso jelly roll on Amazon http://amzn.to/1Khu588

Do you know how many jelly rolls you’d need for a king size quilt? Love the quilt! Beautiful colors.

It depends on the size you want your quilt to be Lorraine. Possibly 3 jelly rolls depending on the size, you may need 4. I am working on a post with the calculations for jelly roll quilts at the moment and it should be ready to go up next week sometime.

Yes, it’s a fun way to make a quilt. I’m not sure who thought of it as it has been around for a long time now but I love the concept.

This is just an FYI. I bought some jelly rolls from Amazon. I bought 3 40 piece jelly rolls. You have to be careful where they come from as mine had a lot of wonderful patterns in them BUT the material frayed something awful jamming up my machine. Just be careful so as not to have the same problem.

Thank you for your tip 😊. I know our readers will appreciate this information. We have also had problems in the past with some of the jelly rolls we have purchased, and not necessarily cheap fabrics either. These days we tend to stick to the known brands – Moda, Robert Kaufman, Kaffe Fassett and a few other trusted brands, and we generally find that Batik jelly rolls are good to work with.
